Queensland's Ivor Burge Women’s team has overcome a three-year winless streak, securing a thrilling victory over Western Australia.
On Friday, the team delivered an emotional and hard fought 59-51 win, marking their first triumph of the tournament.
The victory sparked celebrations from players, coaches and supporters as the team’s dedication and persistence finally paid off.
“Having only re-established the program 3 years ago, this first win felt incredible” said Queensland IBW Head Coach Maddie Borg.
Queensland started the game off strong, jumping out to a double-digit lead early in the opening quarter and stretching it to 14 points by the first break, 20-6. Despite a few bumps along the way Queensland maintained a healthy lead for the remainder of the game to hold on to the eight-point win.
“Our mantras have been effort, attitude and intensity, focusing on effort plays like diving on loose balls, second chance points and rebounding” said Borg.
A standout performance from the young star Ella Linnett proved crucial, with an ability to spread the floor and attack on the fast break. She finished the game with an impressive 23 points and 21 rebounds, leading Queensland to victory.
“Ella is my versatile ‘get it done’ girl. A natural talent who has a pure love for the game of basketball. This kid is a smiling assassin” said Borg.
Raw emotion filled Selkirk stadium as the final buzzer sounded with hugs and tears of joy proving a testament to their perseverance and heart, “We are just going to keep grinding. We have a solid group of players who are determined to get better” said Borg.
The triumph signifies the hard work, patience and dedication that Queensland’s IBW team has applied over their journey.
“Hopefully in the coming years, our fighting maroons will be in medal contention” Borg remarked.
With this long-awaited win, Queensland have made their mark on the Ivor Burge tournament and set the foundation for the future.
